Burial of a sense at blended worlds
Blended Worlds is an exhibition presented at the Brand Library & Art Center that offers an interdisciplinary exploration between art and science, in collaboration with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Through works by artists and scientists, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the relationship between human beings and the Earth, space, and other planets, imagining what it might be like to inhabit different worlds or to “feel” interplanetary realities.
In Moon Ribas’s Burial of a Sense, the artist presents how she implanted vibrating microchips in her body that were connected to the global seismic network. These implants allowed her to perceive earthquakes as internal vibrations, transforming her perception of the Earth until it became an extension of herself. After seven years of living with this “seismic sense,” Ribas removed the microchips and buried them in a symbolic ceremony, marking a farewell to that part of her cyborg identity.
